Sanagani was born in Cape Dorset and has lived there all his life and was raised in a family of Cape Dorset artists. He started to carve around 1967 and his approach to carving has been strongly influenced by his father, Oshitok Ipeelie and is recognizable in his mature style. His mother, the late Nipisha Osuitok and brother, Tuqiqi are also well-known carvers. Sanagani can recall selling his first piece of carving to Terry Ryan of the Cape Dorset Co-op. He has said that he enjoys carving and although he is self-taught, he has also learned a great deal by watching his father.
