PAPIARA TUKIKI

“I enjoy drawing animals and I'm amazed at how they survive up here in the north. Without them, my family would never have survived. I also draw people camping because I am reminded of old times when we lived on the land. Those were good times.”
Papiara Tukiki

Papiara is represented again in the annual collection after a few year hiatus. She can still be counted on for her quirky sense of humour; yes, that is a lemming blowing a bubble in Bubble Gum (2011-27). Her Blue Sharks (2011-26) stands in direct contrast, combining a dark paper background with metallic inks to create a luminous atmosphere.

Born on Christmas Day, 1942, Papiara is married to Qopie Tukiki, a long-time employee of the community’s Housing Association. They live in Cape Dorset.
